Anonymous Donations

What it means, and what we keep

Last Updated: 20 August 2026  |  Version 1.0

When you make a donation through MyMember, you can choose to give anonymously. This page explains exactly what that means, what information is still recorded, and what you give up by choosing it.

📋 In short: your name is hidden from public view, but the transaction itself is still recorded for accounting and audit purposes. Anonymous donations do not come with a receipt and cannot be used for a tax claim.

What does "donate as anonymous" mean?

It means your name is not shown to the public. Your donation appears on the campaign page, donor list and campaign updates without a name attached. It does not mean the donation is untraceable — a record of the transaction is still held by us and by your bank or payment provider.

Who can actually see my anonymous donation?

WhoWhat they see
The public and other membersThe donation amount and date only, listed without a name
Our internal admin teamThe full transaction record, kept for accounting and audit purposes
The organisation running the campaignThe amount, date and payment reference, listed without a donor name or contact details
Your bank or payment providerTheir own record of the payment, as with any transaction

Do I need an account to donate anonymously?

No. Anonymous donations are open to both members and non-members. You can donate through a campaign link shared with you without signing up.

What information do you still collect and keep?

Your name and contact details are not displayed alongside the donation.

Why keep any information at all if the donation is anonymous?

  1. Accounting and audit. Every ringgit received has to be accounted for and reconciled against bank statements.
  2. Fraud and error handling. Duplicate charges, failed transactions and unauthorised payments cannot be investigated without a transaction record.
  3. Legal obligation. Financial records must be retained for seven years, and personal data is handled in line with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Is my payment information stored?

No. Card and bank details are handled directly by our licensed payment gateway partner. MyMember never sees or stores your full card or account number — we store only the payment reference the gateway returns to us.

How long do you keep the record?

Seven years from the date of the donation, in line with statutory financial record-keeping requirements. After that, records are deleted or further anonymised.

Can I ask for my data to be deleted?

You may request access to, or correction of, your personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 by writing to enquiry@mymember.my. Transaction records we are legally required to retain cannot be deleted before the retention period ends, but we can remove identifying details that are not required for that purpose.

Will I receive a receipt or tax-exemption certificate?

No. A tax-exemption receipt is issued by the organisation receiving the donation and must carry the donor's name and identification details. Because we do not pass your name to them, there is nothing for them to issue a receipt against.

If you need a receipt, or intend to claim a tax deduction, please donate under your name instead.

Can an anonymous donation be refunded?

Generally, no. Donations made through a campaign are final once processed, whether given anonymously or under your name.

The exceptions are duplicate payments, payment processing errors and proven fraud. If any of these applies, email enquiry@mymember.my with the payment reference, amount and date shown on your bank or card statement so we can locate the transaction. Approved refunds are returned to the original payment method.

Full details are set out in our Refund Policy.

Will the donation appear in my donation history?

If you were signed in when you donated, yes. The donation stays in your own history so you can keep track of what you have given. It remains hidden from the public and from the organisation running the campaign.

If you donated without signing in, there is nothing to link the donation to, so it will not appear anywhere in the app.

Does it count towards member milestones, badges or leaderboards?

The amount counts towards the campaign's fundraising total, so your contribution still moves the campaign forward.

It is excluded from public donor lists, leaderboards and donor recognition tiers. This is deliberate: if an anonymous gift moved a public ranking, others could work out who gave what simply by watching the board.

I donated through a link shared by a member or staff member. Does that link identify me?

The link records which campaign and which referrer the donation came through. It does not attach your name to the donation, and the person who shared the link cannot see who donated anonymously through it.

Can I change a donation from anonymous to named, or the other way round?

No. Once a donation is submitted, its anonymity setting is fixed. Your name is never written to the campaign record in the first place, so there is nothing for us to reveal later, and no way to undo a donation that was already made under your name.
